The Tempestry Project (www.tempestryproject.com) is personal and collaborative fiber art, environmental education, and climate activism through data representation. The project scales data down into tangible, relatable, and beautiful projects to create a bridge between global climate and personal experiences through knitted, crocheted, and woven temperature tapestries, or "tempestries." Some tempestries depict temperature deviation from the average; others depict daily high temperatures over a year for a specific location. A collection of tempestries showing different years for a single location creates a powerful visual representation of changing temperatures over time. As more people get involved, the patterns become clearer.
To celebrate Earth Month, The Town of Poughkeepsie Climate Smart Task Force invites you to a mini-tempestry workshop with Emily McNeil and Asy Connelly, co-founders of The Tempestry Project. All ages welcome, though young children will benefit from adult guidance. The Tempestry Project uses colorful, tactile, hands-on yarn-crafting to spark conversations about the environment, climate change, and global, local, and personal histories. Participants will go home with a completed mini-tempestry and engage with the community on this critical topic. Registration required.
Participants are welcome to drop in at any time during the program for the activity, and to talk with Emily and Asy to learn more about the Climate Smart Task Force.
