Big Read

The promise of liberty, based on the principle that all are created equal, was appealing. But enslaved men, women, and children in Dutchess County, at the time of the American Revolution, found what at best could be called a mixed bag of success and setbacks. Through the stories of five individuals: Sophia Pooley, Andrew Frazier, Jacob Lyle, and two local men named Jack who find themselves on opposite sides during the war, we come to understand the uncertainty and randomness of the American promise for the enslaved. Presented by Bill Jeffway, the Executive Director of the Dutchess County Historical Society. Registration required.
